The Lodge at Bellevue Square Bellevue, Washington Developer: Kemper Development Company Architect: Sclater Partners Architects Welcoming "connectivity" space From the beginning, the client had a clear goal: this unique public meeting space would provide a hospitable connection between Bellevue Square shopping mall and one of the city’s busiest streets. Designed as an in-fill space between two buildings, the "alley walls" would become the structural framework for an Northwest-style public living room. The space would also function as the central place of entry and egress to shops, restaurants, the street, and the adjacent parking facility. Design deliverables To visually anchor the scene, a 30-foot tall stone fireplace was chosen as the central focal point. The warmth and comfort provided by the fireplace was further complemented by heavy timber columns and ceiling beams—elements that created the framework for the informal stage-set. Materials were selected for their natural beauty: wood, stone, metal, and concrete. The furniture was modern with traditional references. A counter area was constructed between two timber columns to create additional seating.
