Private Family Residence Seattle, Washington Desire As a young professional couple with two small children, the clients wanted a home that reflected the interests of each member of the family—including those of the husband who wanted nothing more than an open kitchen in which he could cook for a small group of friends or a party of up to 60. The couple also wanted to make the most of their east-facing view of Lake Washington. Challenge Without a doubt, the Madrona neighborhood home had an amazing view, but the circa 1980’s home was nondescript and the rooms small and constrained. Circulation was also a challenge given the client’s desire to entertain expansively. In terms of furnishing, the clients wanted a tranquil space that was sophisticated yet comfortable enough for child’s play. Outcome To begin, the entire main level was gutted and the interior spaces reconfigured. Instead of contained spaces, all rooms now open into the next. Given the tranquility of the water view, the decision was made to have nature be the overriding design element. To that end, the interior furnishings are simple but strong; colors almost monochromatic with hits of bold. Appropriate art placement was critical to the scheme.
