Private Family Residence Bellevue, Washington Desire A young professional couple with three children (a newborn, plus a five and ten year old) wanted it all. They wanted to stay in their Tiger Mountain/Lake Sammamish view home, but they wanted more sophistication and more space. They dreamed of elegant furnishings and finishes, but readily admitted that only kid-friendly would do. Challenge As with many a residential project, this transformation started as a kitchen remodel—albeit with the additional charge of choosing new furnishing and finishes for the entire house. However, it didn’t take long before the couple made the decision to gut the main level of their circa 1980s house. The articulated goal: To create a bright, luminous interior that was durable and elegant. Outcome What was originally a series of small rooms on the main level is now a more open space that takes in the view as never before—a design decision that also improved on both function and flow. The decision to add a family-room loft over the main living space (within the roofline) gave the couple extra room without extensive construction. Introducing high-quality materials and finishes throughout was key to creating a serene interior. Starting with a clean palette allowed the couple to weigh scale, proportion and placement when choosing new pieces. The overall feel: fresh, tailored, elegant and—yes—exceptionally kid friendly.
